The random scripture for today is Psalm 5:11-12, “But let all who take refuge in thee rejoice, let them ever sing for joy; and do thou defend them, that those who love thy name may exult in thee. For thou dost cover them with favor as with a shield.” (From The Bible, Revised Standard Version)
It can be difficult in today’s fast paced world to remember that God is there and that he can extend his favor toward us. The dictionary defines favor as friendly regard, partiality, a kind act, a gift, support, advocacy, help, kindness, or an advantage. Remember, dear friends, it is a matter of faith and trust for us to pray for his favor. There is an extraordinary power in this type of prayer, and it demands a measure of surrender to work properly.
When your child needs high tech nursing and machines to life, only a billionaire would be able to pay for the needed medical interventions. I found myself praying through the years for God’s favor to either heal my son so that he would not need this care or to provide knowledgeable doctors, nurses, medical suppliers, insurance, and funding to allow him the best life possible. Month by month, all of my son’s needs were met. I look back over my son’s 22 years of life, and I marvel at the goodness of God to cover him with the people and care that he needed. I always envisioned God’s favor as shielding us from all evil and protecting us.
Our life was not without many, many challenges. Nurses would call in sick, supplies would be late, my son would suffer from colds, stomach flu, allergies, seizures, and other afflictions, and I suffered with severe sleep deprivation for many years. Our faith in God got us through many challenges as the favor of God met our extraordinary needs.
As this month’s scripture expresses, to obtain God’s favor one must admit that one needs God’s refuge, acknowledge that refuge brings one joy, that one loves God above all others, that one follows God’s commandments, and that one accepts his favor and gives thanks for it.
Prayer: “Dear God, today I need your favor. I rest all my cares in your arms. I love that you are my Heavenly Father, and that you take these troubles and begin to work them out for me. I am shielded by your favor, and I take on this day in joy and love. Amen.”
